Are You Too Old To Dance?

I am having one of those days.  It started well – I woke up this morning and after doing a bit of reading while letting the coffee do it’s magic, I started writing.

These days the writing I do to start the day involves posting some blog content on a network for the purpose of building backlinks.  This makes for a good limbering up exercise.  Since the purpose of the content is backlinks and not public consumption, I am able to write freely.  The only audience I have to please is me.

After doing that for an hour or so, I move on to writing that I hope might be read by someone, some day.  Of course this goes a lot slower.  I am not a speedy writer at best and by the time I throw in a bit of research I am doing well to finish an article an hour.  This is much slower than many of the writers I know of, but it is more important that I find the writing acceptable than that I write it fast.

Nearing the completion of the first article of the day I was reminded that I hadn’t listened to my personal radio station for a while. (Check this out at http://songza.com – you can create personal playlists.  It’s pretty cool.) I didn’t put this station together so that I would have soothing background music when I write.  I built it to get me up and moving and it’s filled with many of the songs I car danced to when I was younger.  (I still car dance to the same songs, but that is a whole other thing).

I did try to keep writing, I really did, but eventually I just had to give in.  Fortunately, about that time I was reminded that I hadn’t posted here in a while.  Now I am writing this.  You may have noticed that pretty much everything I write here is opinion based.  I enjoy being able to impart what little wisdom I have without having to wade through other people’s stuff in order to validate it.  I can do this while moving to music quite well.

It’s not that I feel bad about taking an hour or so out of the day to listen to music and recharge the old battery.  I don’t, and I don’t think you should either.  All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.  Even if you are more driven than  I am (that’s almost everyone, by the way) I am sure that you can turn on some tunes and find some mindless chore that needs to be done.

I’m not saying that you should chair dance, even though I think that everybody probably should, I’m just saying don’t fill your days with drudgery.  I mean, what kind of life is that.
